About the Work
Die Kanone (The Cannon) is a 1997 lithograph by the renowned Dutch multidisciplinary artist Armando. This work features an abstract depiction of a military cannon and was produced during the artist's late-career exploration of printmaking. It exemplifies the recurring theme of war in Armando's art, which is informed by his experiences growing up under Nazi occupation.
In this piece, Armando represents the cannon as an abstract, amorphous form, printed with gritty black carborundum using steel intaglio plates. The result is a heavy, textured image set against a vast expanse of white space, which is another characteristic of the artist's signature aesthetics.
From an edition of 60 and printed on heavy wove paper, this lithograph was likely produced at Printshop Piet Clement in Amsterdam and published by Galerie Willy Schoots in Eindhoven.
