About the Work

White on Black Stencil is a print was created in 1968 by German-American artist John Von Wicht. Its striking black-and-white composition exemplifies the artist's unique Cubist style, characterized by interlocking and overlapping planes that convey depth and space. This piece also marks a significant moment in Von Wicht's return to drawing and subtly reflects his transition from the sharp, geometric shapes typical of his earlier works to softer, more expressionistic forms.

During this period, von Wicht also developed a keen interest in Far Eastern calligraphy, which infused his art with spiritual themes and inspired him to create works vertically on Japanese rice paper. Additionally, this print demonstrates Von Wicht's enduring passion for printmaking, a skill he honed while working in a print shop in New York City early in his career. This work, from an edition of ten, was likely printed and co-published with the artist at Ray Blackburn's renowned Printmaking Workshop in New York City, with whom he had a long-standing collaboration.
